The Story Behind the “Ur Gay Now” T-Shirt
When I came out at 17, my family didn’t quite have the playbook for “My Kid is Gay.” My dad, horrified, was convinced my life would include drugs, disease (yes, he threw in HIV), and a sleeping bag on the street. While I did end up without a home for a bit, I never slept on the street—small wins!
My family was deeply committed to the International Church of Christ, and I’ll never forget catching my mom praying, with tears streaming down her face, asking God to “cure” her son’s “struggles” with homosexuality. And after all that, my parents came up with a solution: They cut me off from the outside world, getting rid of anything I had with a signal, and handed me a prayer life-coach—a Mormon man who twice a week tried to help me become a “Whole Man.” This went on for nearly a year. I have never felt more alone and misunderstood than in that time.
Eventually, I found refuge with my mentor and one of my biggest supporters. He, his wife and his three kids only had enough space for me to sleep on the floor in his basement, but I slept there with gratitude. I was free. I spent two years there, battling mental health issues, facing down my dependence on alcohol, and just starting to figure myself out.
This shirt means SO much to me because it’s a way to laugh at how outrageous the concept of conversion therapy is. It’s a way for me to reclaim my story, and share a wink about a time in my life that was brutal, uncertain, and yet so important.
Things with my folks are good now. We’ve found respect and a healthy relationship, but I know that so many others are still going through similar situations. That’s why a portion of our proceeds go to The Trevor Project. If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out at thetrevorproject.org.
So yeah, grab the shirt, own the room, and live your truth—because no one else is gonna live it for you. <3
